Mobile BayBears
Business Turnaround
The Mobile BayBears were a successful minor league baseball team that had fallen on some difficult times. A run-down facility in a college football obsessed market made it difficult to draw many fans on the hot and humid summer nights. The revenues were dropping fast while the overhead continued to increase.
The HWS Group, owners of the Mobile BayBears, tapped me to assess the organization. I quickly identified unnecessary bloat and was able to cut expenses quickly. The staff was not a cohesive unit and we implemented a new management structure that allowed the franchise to be lean and responsive to a changing market. We hired a motivated and passionate sales staff as we started to build back the customer base.
Within one year, significant improvements to the fan experience were evident and we turned a large operating deficit into a break-even endeavor. By year two, the franchise was turning an annual operating profit with positive cash flow. Following another year of growth, the financials told a better story and the HWS Group sold the asset providing a positive ROI for all shareholders.
