Today marks Opening Day for many minor league baseball teams nationwide, a culmination of tireless efforts by executives to deliver affordable family entertainment to their communities. I enjoy my role as a dedicated fan these days, yet the professional anticipation, nerves, and excitement of an Opening Day linger as cherished memories.
Reflecting on Opening Daye evokes a spectrum of experiences – from exciting walk-off victories to blowout losses, from braving freezing temperatures to enduring rainouts (thankfully, no earthquakes). However, one Opening Day stands out vividly, etched in memory for all the wrong reasons – the inaugural Opening Day of my tenure as a General Manager.
In January 2004, I assumed the responsibility of General Manager for the Modesto A’s, a milestone I had set my sights on since college, uncertain of its attainability. The 2004 season, coinciding with our 30th anniversary of our affiliation with the Oakland Athletics, was shaping up to be special. Yet, fate had a different script in store for Opening Day.
Months of meticulous planning culminated in a sold-out stadium and the customary pre-game address to the crowd awaited me. As I stepped to the microphone, adrenaline coursing through my veins, silence greeted my first words.
Unbeknownst to me, a power outage had cast the concourse into darkness, disrupting essential services and plunging the stadium operations into chaos. The excitement of Opening Day dissolved into frustration as long lines snaked through the concourse testing the patience of fans and staff.
The night unfolded in a whirlwind of complaints and passionate feedback. Acknowledging our shortcomings, I accepted the responsibility and asked for a second chance, recognizing that complaints stemmed from a deep-rooted passion for the team. Every disgruntled voice represented an opportunity to transform frustration into loyalty.
In the aftermath, amidst the disappointment of a botched Opening Day, I gleaned invaluable lessons in resilience and humility. Little did I know those lessons would soon be put to the test in the face of even greater challenges, looming on the horizon several months later.
